LRT-1 private operator Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) confirms today that the highly anticipated LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 is on track to serve the riding public this November 2024. This was announced in a press briefing held with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Malacañang Press Corps (MPC) at the New Executive Building in Malacañang.
The Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) Cavite Extension is a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project, which is expected to significantly improve connectivity to the south area of Metro Manila, easing traffic congestion and providing commuters with a faster and more convenient travel option. Travel time from Quezon City to Paranaque City will be reduced to less than an hour. Once Phase 1 is operational, the extended LRT-1 is projected to add approximately 80,000 passengers daily during the first year of operations. Average ridership of LRT-1 now is at 323,000 daily.
“We are excited to share that LRT-1 Cavite Extension Phase 1 is all set to open this month. This project is expected to bring significant benefits to commuters, including reduced travel time, improved air quality, and economic growth in the region. We look forward to celebrating this milestone as a testament to the unwavering commitment of LRMC and our partners to provide a world-class transportation solution to the Filipino people,” said Enrico R. Benipayo, LRMC President and CEO.
LRMC has been working closely with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), as well as local government units and other partner government agencies, for the successful completion of this project. Ongoing activities for Phase 1 include system integration works, commissioning of train sets, and operational readiness tests to ensure a safe and seamless integration of the existing LRT-1 system with the extended line. Additionally, automated entrance gates, ticket vending machines, and teller booths have been installed and tested.
The five new stations under Phase 1 include Redemptorist – Aseana Station, MIA Road Station, PITX Station, Ninoy Aquino Avenue Station, and Dr. Santos (formerly Sucat) Station. All stations are designed with accessibility in mind, featuring elevators, escalators, and tactile guides to cater to the needs of persons with special needs. LRMC is committed to creating a safe and inclusive transportation environment for all passengers.
The riding public is advised to follow LRMC’s official channels for the detailed operational announcements on the extended line in the coming days.
