LRT-1 completes first test run on Cavite Extension Phase 1

Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1) marked another milestone yesterday, December 19, with the first successful test run on the tracks of Cavite Extension Phase 1.

Spearheaded by Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC)’s Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor Alstom, the train test run is part of the detailed and rigorous preparations to ensure that Phase 1 of the extension is completed by the last quarter of 2024, bringing the promise of a faster commute and improved connectivity to more commuters in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

The first test run aimed to provide a compatibility check and assess the interface between vital infrastructure components such as (1) train pantograph and the Overhead Catenary System (2) train wheels and rail tracks (3) train and platforms including other viaduct trackside structures. The start of a series of test runs featured a 2nd Generation train set (LRVs 1124-1126-1127-1121) and a running speed of up to 4.5kph only as part of safety precaution. The Gen-2 train set is the widest in terms of car body making it the most strategic option to check for initial compatibility with station platforms, walkways, cableways, etc.

Further train test runs are planned in the coming weeks to include the other train generations of LRT-1 traveling at various speeds and load capacities.

“It was a proud moment for us to see our train running along the extension line of LRT-1 from Redemptorist Station to Dr. Santos Station. As we near the completion of this much-awaited railway project, the general public will begin to see more trains undergoing test runs and trial runs. These activities serve as a testament to the dedication and hardwork of LRMC team, our contractors, and partners in making the LRT-1 Cavite Extension a reality,” said LRMC President and CEO Juan F. Alfonso.

Along with the train test runs, the five (5) new stations under the 6.7-kilometer phase 1 project are in various stages of development. LRT-1 Cavite Extension project continues to shape up as it registered a 95% progress rate as of the end of October 2023 for the civil and system works.

“The LRT-1 Cavite Extension is now taking shape. We are confident that once this extension is operational, it will help in significantly improving the train system in our country providing a more efficient and reliable transportation option,” LRMC President Alfonso added.
